 Four O'clock Flower (Marvel Peru, நான்கு மணி பூ, அந்தி மந்தாரை)

 Like this beautiful 4 o'clock flower, blooming in our back yard around pears tree and along the veggie plants.  Its botanical name is Mirabilis Jalapa and also North and South America called Marvel, Peru. Different color varieties of the flower, and different colored blossom on the same plant.  In Tamil Nadu Peoples called this flower named as Anthi Mantharai(அந்தி மந்தாரை).

 It is blooming time of 4 o'clock, in the middle of the afternoon, some of them bloom evening 8 - 10 o'clock, and closes early in the morning. Or little bit earlier on a cloudy afternoon.

இந்தப் பூவினை நாம் நான்கு  மணிப்பூ என்று அழைப்போம்.  இதில் உள்ள முக்கிய அம்சம் இரண்டு நிறங்கள் ஒரே பூவில் காணப்படும்.   இந்த நான்கு மணி பூக்கள் பல நிறங்களில் பல வண்ணங்களில் காணப்படும்.ஒரு மரத்திலேயே பல்வேறு நிறப்பூக்கள் மலர்ந்திருக்கும். இந்நிறங்கள் பொட்டுக்களாகவும், அள்ளித்தெளித்த கோலம் போலவும், சில கோடுகள் போன்றும் காணப்படும்.  இதில் இருக்கும் இன்னுமொரு சுவாரசியம் என்னவென்றால் ஒரு பூ ஒரு நிறம் மாறும் தன்மையுடையது. இவை மஞ்சள், மெல்லிய சிவப்பு, அல்லது வெள்ளை நிறத்தில் காணப்படும்.  உதாரணமாக மஞ்சள் ஒரு இருண்ட சிவப்பு நிறத்திலும், வெள்ளைப் பூக்கள் மெல்லிய ஊதா நிறத்திலும் மாற்றமடையும். இவை பிற்பகலிலேயே பூக்கும், காலையில் பூக்கள் குவிந்து வாடிவிடும். மறுநாள் திரும்பவும் மாலையில் பூக்கள் மலரும். இவற்றின் இதழ்கள்(அல்லிகள்) நிறத்தைக் கொடுத்து பூவாவதில்லை. இவற்றின் புல்லிகளே பூக்களாகின்றன.
இவற்றை அந்துப்பூச்சிகள் (Sphinidae) (நீண்ட ஊசிபோன்ற உறிஞ்கி மூலம்) வாசனை மூலம் முகர்ந்து மகரந்தச்சேர்க்கை அடைகின்றன. 
இந்த நான்கு மணிக்கன்றுகள் தென் அமெரிக்காவில் முதலில் தென்  அமெரிக்காவில் தோன்றியதெனலாம். இவை வெப்பமான பகுதிகளிலும், சில குளிரான பகுதிகளிலும் காணப்படும். குளிரான இடங்களில் உள்ளவை கிழங்குகள் (முகிளுருவான வேர்கள்) நிலத்திலேயே உறங்கு நிலையிலிருந்து வசந்த காலத்தில் மீண்டும் முளைக்கும்.  இவற்றிற்கு நல்ல போதுமான சூரிய ஒளி தேவைப்படும். இவை 0.9 மீ உயரம் வரை வளரும். இவற்றின் விதை முதலில் மஞ்சள் நிறமாயும், முதிர்ச்சியடைந்ததும் கோள வடிவான கறுப்பு நிறமாகவும் இருக்கும்.
